5 NEW fashion books everyone should read in 2022!
Fashion is an ever-changing, energetic industry that has inspired countless design and fashion books. So many, in fact, that it can be hard to keep up with the latest releases.
While there have been some excellent fashion books published recently, these are my top five (relatively new) fashion industry books for any aspiring designer or fashion lover's reading list:
1. A Visible Man: A Memoir by Edward Enninful
The book is a memoir by the only man of color to ever head a major magazine. Edward Kobina Enninful OBE was born in Ghana, and he moved to London at a very young age. He started his career as a teenage model for i-D magazine, and then worked his way up through the ranks until he was named editor at large of British Vogue in 2017 and is now also the European editorial director of Condé Nast.
His writing style is direct, honest, and accessible—a refreshing read for anyone who's ever felt like they don't belong in fashion or find themselves struggling to make it as an outsider in any industry. It's also a great example of how to tell your own story without making it about yourself or trying too hard: Enninful candidly details his experience and struggles as a Black, gay, working-class refugee trying to succeed in one of the world's most exclusive industries.
2. Future Now: Virtual Sneakers to Cutting-Edge Kicks by Elizabeth Semmelhack
The world of footwear and sneakers is perhaps the most fast-moving and futuristic in all of fashion. And if you want to keep up with the future of the fashion industry, you better keep up with this sector.
In fact, Elizabeth Semmelhack's Future Now is proof that fashion and technology are inseparable. The book covers everything from 3D printed shoes, the invention of sustainable materials like mushroom leather to augmented reality clothing, and the sneakers sold in games like Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite. It also explains how technology is changing the way we think about our bodies, the environment, and even our future!
If you love reading about new technologies in fashion and would like to learn more about their potential impact on culture and society, then this is definitely the book for you!

3. Fashionopolis: The Price of Fast Fashion and the Future of Clothes by Dana Thomas
This book is for anyone who works or is interested in the fashion industry and most importantly, cares about the impact of fashion on our environment and in the global economy.
Dana Thomas is a journalist and author who has been writing about the fashion industry for over 20 years. Her 2020 book, Fashionopolis: The Price of Fast Fashion and the Future of Clothes is an in-depth look at not just the damaging impact of the fashion industry but also highlights visionary designers as well as companies who are moving the industry towards a more positive future.
Dana covers issues like the movement to reclaim traditional crafts or the development of new sustainable technologies to produce better fashion for everyone. She investigates how brands are using supply chain transparency tools to ensure ethical practices, what individuals can do with their buying power, and whether we can get out of this cycle through our choices as consumers!

4. Anna: The Biography by Amy Odell
This is a great book for anyone who loves Anna Wintour and fashion. It's written by Amy Odell, a writer at Vogue who's been at the magazine since 2008. In the book, she talks about Anna's life and career to give readers an inside look into the world of high-fashion magazines—and how they came to be what they are today.
It also shows how Anna has evolved as a woman over time—from her early years working for Harper's Bazaar to becoming one of America's most powerful women in the media today. If you want an insider's perspective on Anna and her role as editor-in-chief at Vogue, then this book is for you!
5. Modesty: A Fashion Paradox by Hafsa Lodi
This is a must-read for anyone interested in the idea of modesty, no matter your religious background. Having lived in the UAE for half her life, and a fashion journalist herself, the author explores the concept through her own personal lens as a Muslim woman.
Lodhi talks about this thriving sector and its many players – from influencers, global brands, to high profile celebrities and public speakers who contribute and control this industry in many ways. She covers different topics like the origins of modest dressing, non-Muslim societies that opt for modest clothes and big luxury brands that now sell modest clothes, as well as their effect on society at large.
Conclusion
Whether you're looking for inspiration from some of the most iconic fashion personalities or want to learn more about what's new in the industry, fashion books can be a great resource to stay in the know.
I hope this list gives you some good ideas and helps you choose your next great read!
